Welsh Slate

Slate is an incredibly useful and versatile material that has been used for many hundreds of applications throughout history. Slate is usually thought of as a roofing material and it is commonly used as such. It can easily be broken into thin strips, which can then easily be made into roofing tiles. However, slate is used to create many other objects too including kitchen worktops and outdoor paving.

Many people in the construction and building industries who regularly use slate often comment that Welsh slate is very best available. Welsh slate is known to be extremely durable and resistant to damage, which makes it ideal for use as a building material. Also Wales has a long history of slate production and there are many well established Welsh slate companies that are extremely experienced in producing high quality building materials with the slate they source from quarries around Wales.

The vast majority of Welsh slate is sourced from quarries and mines in North Wales, although slate mines are somewhat rarer now than they used to be and the majority of Welsh slate is quarried. The island of Anglesey is home to many Welsh slate quarries and the areas around this area are also known to have extremely high quantities of slate, much of which can be seen in outcrops protruding from the ground. Some Welsh slate is also sourced from the South of the country, although there is considerably less than can be found in the North.
